And now it’s a good day…

I dare you not to smile at this.

Love this picture so much!

Thanks to an awesome fellow blogger, http://runningdetermined.tumblr.com/, I have discovered this amazing website called the Daily Mile where you can log all of your runs and build a network.  I love the thought of the accountability.  It is great motivation to get my last run in before my half marathon this weekend.

Check it out! http://www.dailymile.com/people/stephaniee18#ref=tophd

30 Day Running Challenge: Day 17

How many miles a week are you usually running and what’s your normal pace? How would you like to improve this?

My mileage has been pretty low lately, around 20-25, but is increasing significantly with my training plan for the October marathon.

I am not a fast runner by any means and usually come in around 10 minutes per mile on a long run, but have noticed that my pace has really picked up during shorter runs, coming in more at 9 minutes per mile.

It would be ultimate goal to run a marathon at a 9 minute mile, but being a super asthmatic, I try to just focus on distance and not so much time, but I will get there.

Consistency and speed work is the key!

30 Day Running Challenge: Day 14

What was your favorite race you’ve run? If you haven’t raced, what are you most looking forward to with racing?

I would say my favorite so far was the Chicago Marathon.  It was just an amazing atmosphere to be in.  It was SO hot that day, and it was like the entire city came out to support every runner; from the North side all the way to the South side.

People had hoses running from their yards spraying us down, had set up their own water/hydration stations, fruit stands, cold sponges, the hotter it got, the more people were coming out to help.  It was so awesome.

Mexico town, Little Italy, China town, all just PARTYING!  I could hardly hear my ipod over them, and it was unlike anything I have ever seen.  Never have I felt so welcome and cared for by a city.

The best part about it though was that my 2 best friends, Liz and Julie, along with Paul, were there at the finish line waiting for me.  There is nothing like having a cheering section.

Julie, Liz, and me way back in the day…. LOVE these girls.

30 Day Running Challenge: Day 13

Have you ever been injured because of running? How?

Thankfully, I have never had any injuries while running.  I sometimes need to ice my knees, but that is very infrequent.  If I keep up with my glucosamine supplements and cod liver oil, I stay in good shape.

The best injury I’ve had (thankfully) were some awesome blisters from the Chicago Marathon.

Doing this for sure!

fitvillains:

Came across this interesting WOD from the Spartan Race peeps! It’s ONLY 15 minutes and very SNEAKY: by round 10, your plank may be a-wobblin’. 🙂

This is great as a workout on its own, a warmup or as a ‘finisher’ to your strength routine. It’s 15 minutes total.

10 Rounds

A. 45 seconds jumping rope (high knees, jacks, burpees, running etc. Any cardio will do, at about. Level 7 on a scale of 1-10 for intensity).
B. 45 seconds plank.

Timers: 20 intervals of 45 seconds.

Recipe of the month: Beet and Walnut Salad!

I went into this recipe like a complete 12 year old; “Beets are gross and I hate Rachel Ray” (because it is a Rachel Ray recipe).

Ok, I don’t really hate Rachel Ray, I just think there was an over-saturation of her a few years back that I am scarred from. I didn’t need to see her on every channel, not to mention on my box of Wheat Thins.

But I digress…I said, “I don’t like beets”, but I would be hard pressed to tell you the last time, if ever, that I have eaten one. Plus I figured, this whole cooking experiment was to open my mind, so with my open arms in a cranial sense, I loaded up at the grocery store.

The best part about this recipe is that there is no actual “cooking” involved. Not only did it turn out to be super tasty, but it is a great way to get loads of vegetables into a meal, vegetables that I would guess most people don’t use on a daily basis.

Beets are actually a very underrated vegetable. Ancient Romans used beetroot as a treatment for fevers and constipation , amongst other ailments. Today, beets are one of the best foods out there for you. It is a high-fiber little power house that can help lower your LDL, or bad, cholesterol, is a known anti-inflammatory, is loaded with natural antioxidants, and contains folate, an essential B vitamin.

A picture of my dad and aunt picking beets back in the day… I’m just kidding, I found this picture on the internet. I have no historical connection to beets.

Let’s not forget about the radishes! Also a high-fiber contender, radishes are loaded with vitamin C. Both beets and radishes are also noted as being cancer fighters, mainly colon cancer.

Pick ‘em up next time you are at the farmers market! They are great for snacking too!

The preserves (I used raspberry) gave this salad a very sweet and refreshing finish, and all in all I found this to be a great little dish! And it turns out that beets aren’t really gross at all.

You can find the entire recipe at: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/beet-and-walnut-salad-recipe/index.html .

I will have original pictures back next month. Technology was not on my side this weekend.

Enjoy!

These are the new shoes I get to test out!  The color is a little out there, but I have learned to not be picky when someone hands me a free pair of shoes saying, “here, run on these for me”.  Ok!

I’ll run in anything, and this will be my first go around with K-Swiss.  I will see how 5 miles feels tomorrow.

Side note:  I lost one follower after my embarrassing story… they must not like fart stories.
